FAQs
We welcome feedback!
We aim for continual improvement by audit and stringent procedures and thus feedback from certificate holders about training or examinations is always welcome. If you have a query or a problem we would like to hear about it - if you don't tell us, we don't know! Please contact us by completing the Contact Form - we will do our best to help you!
How do I receive my examination results?
When you pass your examination, a Notice of Results will be issued from TWI Examinations.
If you have failed any parts of the examination, the reason for failure will be shown clearly but briefly (eg it might say 'insufficient technical detail'). This is usually enough for a candidate to know what he has to revise for his retest, but if there is any doubt, it is possible to contact the Chief Examiner at TWI Examinations and ask for some extra information on a reason for failure. He will provide as much information as he can without revealing any confidential examination material.
How will I receive my certificate?
Two copies of a certificate of proficiency will be issued to the organisation or person that pays the examination fees.
I have held my CSWIP Welding Inspector (or Senior Welding Inspector) certificate for 10 years and to renew it I understand I have to take an examination after providing my proof of experience during the past five years. Must I take the exam? I do not see the need.
Yes, the Welding Specialists and Practitioners Management Committee decided this at least six or seven years ago and when you received your last renewal, there was information in the package which told you that at the 10 year point an examination would be necessary. There are no exemptions to this requirement.
I want to take the CSWIP Underwater Inspection examination. However, I am very experienced - can I go straight to taking the 3.2U course and examination without first taking the 3.1U course and examination?
No, to gain a 3.2U you have to have held a 3.1U qualification for one year. There are no exemptions to this requirement.
I am working offshore during the time that I am supposed to be taking my CSWIP 3.1U/3.2U/3.3U/3.4U five year examination. I do not want to lose my qualification. What can I do?
Providing you put in a request in writing/fax/e-mail before the expiry date or within 30 days of the expiry date, the CSWIP Secretariat is allowed to grant you three months extra time in which to take the examination. This is only extra time - it is not an extension to the expiry date and work carried out after the expiry date has no certificate cover. However, by requesting formally it allows you to receive a firm answer to your request and the proper database entries to be made so that when you send in your paperwork there is no problem.

In addition, TWI can run tailor-made courses to suit your company's needs.
What training is available for hot gas welding of thermoplastics?
TWI offers various training options for this process, which range from the Appreciation course, through to the Certification Scheme. TWI also deliver tailor made courses at company premises to suit the requirements of individual companies.
The 1 day Hot Gas Appreciation course is designed to give those with no knowledge of plastics an insight into the process, the equipment available, the eventual possibilities of the process and a hands-on session to get a feel for hot gas welding. This usually results in candidates taking the next step, which is the Hot Gas course.
The 5 day Hot Gas Welding course is again designed for the beginner, for example, apprentices or new starters, and aims to provide a good start in hot gas welding. The course contains theoretical information on plastics and hands-on welder training in PP (polypropylene) and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) in both sheet and pipe form, in various configurations. By the end of the course, candidates are expected to achieve a good level of understanding of the process.
The CSWIP Certification Scheme is for experienced welders, who must have completed an apprenticeship as a plastics fabricator, undergone an approved welding course or spent a minimum of 2 years as a plastics welder. The Scheme, which has 2 day duration, consists of a theory session to enable the candidates to take the multiple-choice theory paper, followed by a practical examination in the chosen category.
