Inside CSWIP: Stakeholder governance

Fri, 25 June, 2021

CSWIP’s aim is to provide a reliable and credible source of personnel with role-specific knowledge and skill to industry. In order to achieve this, all of our certification schemes are governed by a Management Committee, who develop and implement the schemes, as well as approving training courses, and authorising assessments that satisfy the needs of industry.

There are three Management Committees, each responsible for different certification schemes:

  • CSWIP Welding Specialist and Practitioners Management Committee (WSPMC), who has oversight over schemes such as NDT, Welding Inspection and BGAS-CSWIP.
  • CSWIP In-Service Inspection Management Committee (CISMIC), who is responsible for all our Underwater and offshore topside Certification Schemes
  • CSWIP Plastics Welding Management Committee (CPWMC), who oversee our Plastic Certification Schemes.

In addition to the above, our Management Committees make decisions regarding the misuse of certificates, breaches of our code of conduct as well as conducting course assessments to ensure that what is being taught by our approved training providers is a true reflection of our certification schemes.

Management Committees are in turn governed by our Certification Management Board (CMB), who maintains ultimate responsibility for TWI CL and ensuring that it continues to meet the requirements of its UKAS accreditation.

Although their responsibilities may differ, the one thing that all these Management Committees and the Board have in common is that they are made up of volunteers from industry. These volunteers represent a variety of sectors and companies, such as Rolls-Royce, Essar Oil and Gas, National Grid Gas plc, Shell, Subsea7 and even the HSE, to name but a few!

Stakeholder governance places TWI CL in an ideal position to ascertain, directly from industry, what their requirements are and how TWI CL can best address them.

It is because of this guidance that CSWIP has been for over 50 years, and will continue to be, a reliable and credible source of assurance for their role-specific knowledge and skill for over 40,000 certificate holders worldwide.
