TWI Certification Ltd and Additive Manufacturing

Thu, 27 May, 2021

The global additive manufacturing (AM) industry is expected to rise exponentially in the coming years. With an increase in use of ever-evolving additive manufacturing technology comes the need for a skilled workforce to meet the industrial demand[1]. The Erasmus+ funded Sector Skills Strategy in Additive Manufacturing (SAM) project sets out to establish a platform of AM skills at European, national and regional levels.

As the well-established and highly regarded UK Approved Nominated Body (ANB) by the European Federation for Welding Cutting and Joining (EWF) and International Institute of Welding (IIW) for the Welding Coordinator Diploma (EWF/IIW Welding Specialist, Technologist and Engineer), it was important that TWI Certification Ltd (TWI CL) was involved in the rollout of AM qualifications too. As such, TWI CL is an active member of the AM qualifications Governing Board, the International AM Qualification Committee (IAMQC).

TWI CL has preliminary authorisation as the UKs Additive Manufacturing Approved Nominated Body (AM ANB) and, once fully approved, will be able to authorise training and further education providers as Additive Manufacturing Approved Training Bodies (AM ATBs). One of these potential AM ATBs is Irish Manufacturing Research (IMR), who have recently completed the initial phase of the AM ATB application process. Soon they will undergo a documentary and site audit and, once successful, will be approved to provide EWF AM Qualifications.

In the interim, they are working hard within the SAM Project to trial the competence units (CUs) of the qualifications. In June and July 2021, the IMR will be running a free pilot course of the CU, ‘Certification, Qualification and Standards (CQS) in Additive Manufacturing (AM),’ and invites anyone with interest to contact Katrina Farrell (Email: katrina.farrell@imr.ie). Spaces are limited, so early booking is advised.
