CSWIP Certified for 42 years and counting...

Thu, 10 July, 2025

Gaining his first CSWIP certification in 1983, Garry Jones is one of our longest standing CSWIP Certificate holders. His certifications have allowed for many opportunities over a long career in Underwater Inspection, but how did it all start?

Looking to his friends already in the diving world as inspiration, Garry decided to train as a diver and started his first job in the Middle East in 1981. Two years later, he started his journey to certification, firstly gaining his 3.1d Underwater Inspection certificate (now the 3.2U certificate) which facilitated further progression within his diving career and enabled him to gain more experience within underwater inspection. Opening up new opportunities for Garry, he became one of the few divers with CSWIP certification in 1984, and he was given his first air diving job in the North Sea for 2W’s (on the Claymore Alpha and Piper Alpha platforms for Occidental).

After that, there was no stopping Garry. He gained his 3.4U certification, opening up even more opportunities for his career. From pipeline and comprehensive platform and subsea wellhead inspections to offshore wind farm projects in the UK, his experience and career has spanned decades and the globe!

But diving wasn’t the only opportunity for Garry; his experience and certifications combined even opened up an interesting offer from TWI Ltd in 2013 to become a full time Senior Lecturer in Subsea Inspection, but his commitment to diving was too strong for him to step away from it full time.

Today, Garry continues his work as a underwater inspection engineer on ROV and Diving projects around the world, including detailed inspections on two damaged pipelines in the Baltic Sea.

So, for the person who has been everywhere, and conducted every type of underwater inspection, what’s next? Continue his underwater inspection work with his CSWIP 3.4U certificate, of course! But more importantly, Garry is considering continuing with his CSWIP 3.2U certificate, leading to him holding the certificate for 47 years continuously!

Garry however admits he wouldn’t have achieved such a remarkable record without the help of others. Therefore, he would like to formerly thank specifically:

  • Dave McIver, Jayne Keating and Mike Harding (TWI Middlesbrough)
  • Tony Essex (SXSubsea)
  • Richard Humphreys

Congratulations to Garry from everyone at TWI Certification Ltd on your fantastic achievement, we are delighted to have been a part of your career and support you in your certification journey.
