ISO 9712 Updates - NEW CANDIDATES

Thu, 11 September, 2025

The British Standard Institution (BSI) have updated the ISO 9712 standard. As our CSWIP Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Certification scheme is in accordance with ISO 9712, we have had to update the scheme in line with the updated standard.

Our updated scheme will go live from 1st January 2026. Examinations undertaken before this date will be conducted as per the current scheme document (and the ISO 9712:2012 standard) and, where successful, certification issued accordingly. Examinations undertaken on or after 1 January 2026 will be conducted as per the new scheme document (and the ISO 9712:2022 standard) and, where successful, the certification issued accordingly.

Updates to the CSWIP Non-Destructive Testing Certification scheme for new candidates are as follows:

  • The current scheme document requires training to be recorded in hours, and experience in months. As a result of the changes to the standard, the new scheme document will require training and experience to be recorded in days. (Please note: a day is a minimum of seven hours and a maximum of 12 hours, and can be undertaken in a single event or accumulated over several of days. Candidates will need to ensure that they provide their training and experience information in the correct format.)
  • Up to 50% of the required industrial experience can now be gained through attending an approved intensive practical training course. One day’s attendance at such a course may be equivalent to up to a maximum of five days’ industrial experience. For further information on the course and how to sign up, please contact our approved training provider.
  • Successful candidates will receive a certificate with three dates – issue date, expiry date and effective date. Certificates will no longer be valid from date of the successful examination, instead they will run from the date the certification decision was made – which is the effective date.
  • The weighting for the different parts of the examination have changed (see standard for full details)
  • Basic Radiation Safety and Radiation Safety will still be offered as a CSWIP scheme, but not within our NDT scheme documents, and they remain a requirement for Radiographic Inspectors. Candidates will need to ensure that they have familiarised themselves with the requirements of the new scheme.

Please Note: ISO 9712 is created and controlled by BSI. TWI Certification Ltd does not have any control or influence over the contents of the 9712 standard.
