ISO 9712 Updates - 5 YEAR RENEWALS

Thu, 11 September, 2025

The British Standard Institution (BSI) have updated the ISO 9712 standard. As our CSWIP Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Certification scheme is in accordance with ISO 9712, we have had to update the scheme in accordance with the updated standard.

Our revised scheme will go live on 1 January 2026. Applications received before this date will be reviewed against the current scheme document (and the ISO 9712:2012 standard). Applications submitted on or after 1 January 2026 will be assessed against the new scheme document (and the ISO 9712:2022 standard).

Updates to the CSWIP Non-Destructive Testing Certification scheme for five year renewal applications are as follows:

  • No applications for renewal will be accepted after 12 months have passed, and there is no ability to appeal this decision. If a candidate wishes to have certification and their certificate expired over 12 months prior, they must return to initial status.
  • Verified employment log sheets will be required every 12 months, without which your certificate becomes invalid and you will not be able to renew. These must be submitted with your renewal application.
  • The renewal process at the five year point has changed – renewal is now via structured credit or an examination.
  • Candidates will be required to submit an application pack (similar to what they currently submit but with additional aspects, e.g., the verified log sheets mentioned above), but also undertake an exam or provide additional information for the structured credit route. Both of which must be applied for via TWI Certification Ltd (TWI Cert) before undertaking the exam or submitting a structured credit application.
  • All candidates, regardless of level, will have the option of the new ‘structured credit’ route at the five year renewal stage. If your structured credit application is successful, you will not have to take the renewal exam. If your structured credit application is unsuccessful, you will have two attempts at taking the renewal exam.
  • You can still renew up to six months before the expiry of your current certificate. However, if you fail the renewal exam/structured credit application, your current certification will be suspended until you can successfully gain certification.
  • Successful candidates will receive a certificate with three dates – issue date, expiry date and effective date. Certificates will no longer be valid from date of the successful examination, instead they will run from the date the certification decision was made – which is the effective date.
  • If you apply to renew your certificate after the expiry of your current certificate, the effective date on your new certificate will not be backdated. Your new certificate will be dated as of the day that the certification decision was made (see above) but your expiry date will run from the date of your previous certificate. This means that there is a risk of a gap in your certification if you do not apply on time.
  • Basic Radiation Safety and Radiation Safety will still be offered as a CSWIP scheme, but not within our NDT scheme documents, and they remain a requirement for Radiographic Inspectors. Candidates will need to ensure that they have familiarised themselves with the requirements of the new scheme.

Please Note: ISO 9712 is created and controlled by BSI. TWI Certification Ltd does not have any control or influence over the contents of the 9712 standard.
