ISO 9712 is an international standard set by the British Standard Institution (BSI) that specifies requirements for the qualification and certification of personnel who perform industrial non-destructive testing (NDT). The ISO 9712 standard has been updated to ‘improve clarity, address conflicts with other standards, and incorporate new technologies and testing methods’.
Our CSWIP Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Certification scheme provides a comprehensive range of competence assurance solutions in accordance with ISO 9712. The updates to the ISO 9712 standard mean that our CSWIP NDT Certification Scheme must also be changed so that it is in accordance with the new standard.
Our revised scheme will go live on 1 January 2026. Applications received before this date will be reviewed against the current scheme document (and the ISO 9712:2012 standard). Applications submitted on or after 1 January 2026 will be assessed against the new scheme document (and the ISO 9712:2022 standard).
The main changes to the scheme document are:
- The training and experience requirements are now stated in days, rather than hours or months.
- A new Intensive Practical Training Course is available which can provide up to 50% of the required industrial experience.
- The renewal process at the five year point has changed – renewal is now via structured credit or an examination.
- Verified employment log sheets will be required every 12 months, without which your certificate becomes invalid and you will not be able to renew or recertify at the 5/10 year stages
- There will now be three dates on your certificate – issue date, expiry date and effective date. Effective date is the date the certification decision was made and when your certificate is valid from.
- The date that your new certificate starts will be different dependent on whether you submitted your renewal application before or after your current certificates expiry date.
In the coming weeks, news articles will be published on our website providing specific details about the changes to each stage of the certification process, what changes can be expected within the CSWIP Non-Destructive Testing Certification Scheme, and how this will affect current and future certificate holders.
